Kids these days just get everything handed to them. Back in my day, if you wanted something, you'd have to work for it. You want an iphone? I want some A's on your report card. There should be a "Parent Mode" where parents can disable certain features so they can just use it for calling incase of emergencies

So, if this happens two things are wrong, either the kid is just sick, or the parent have not raised the kid properly. In some cases the kid has been raised properly but they might just be sick.

I agree with @Skerdy here, this story has a silver lining in my eyes that I think much outweighs the fear. This girl is undoubtedly a sociopath or psychopath and now she is in the system and can hopefully get the treatment she needs and the mother is doing fine. This compared to what normally happens as sociopaths age and become much better suited to society as a whole and are generally good at hiding their inability to empathize. This is a happy story in my books.

I think kids still spend a lot of time outside, maybe that's just because I live in rural Alberta. High speed internet is still a luxury up here. As is good cellphone reception.

The mother and her daughter obviously lacked a proper connection. As the parent is in charge of that, the child cannot be fully(if at all) blamed. She wasn't ready to become a mother.It could be argued this is a result of the welfare state which subsidises irresponsibility. Or let's blame the technology.

Can someone explain to my why children have smartphones?When I was a kid and cell phones required a briefcase, I wasn't even allowed to have a land line of my own. Seriously. I love my iPhone and iPad and my computer, but I'm a grown adult. But no kid anywhere needs a fucking "device." If you want your kid to have a phone get them a flip phone. And just don't buy them tablets and computers. Let them use yours when they earn the right.
